Hello fountain pen fans! Madigan here, bringing you my latest Monday Matchup. Like the rest of the fountain pen world, I've fallen in love with Robert Oster Signature inks. I'm a particular fan of deep red inks, in general, so Robert Oster Astorquiza Rot caught my eye as soon as I perused the line. After reading our blog on fountain pens with unique writing experiences, I've wanted to give the Aurora Ipsilon with a 1.1mm Italic nib to see what writing with a "crisp italic" was like. Thus, this match was born!
I don't know about you, but winter is always a bit of a struggle for me. The long, cold, dark days don't provide as much inspiration and it's easy to get discouraged without a bit of sunlight. I stumbled across the poem Apple Blossoms by Susan Kelly-Dewitt and was reminded that even on the darkest of winter days, there is still beautiful things happening, even if I can't see them.
To start this piece, I took a pencil and sketched an apple on a piece of Rhodia dot grid paper. Once I was finished, I went over it with a dark black ink so that it would shine through. I taped that to my desk and then I took a sheet of Tomoé River Paper in Cream and taped that over it. I dipped the tip of my water brush pen into the cap of the ink and filled in the apple, starting with the lightest parts and layering in more and more ink. Once it was dry, I took the pen and outlined the apple, adding in cross-hatching to give it a more layered look. Finally, I wrote the quote, following a calligraphy font.
I'm going to be honest here- the Aurora Ipsilon with a 1.1mm Italic was not my favorite. For my writing style, it was hard to get flowing, even with such a wet ink. However, I don't think I could have created such crisp and beautiful writing with another pen or nib, so I see what the appeal is. If I was really into copying old calligraphy fonts, this is definitely a pen that I would try.
Robert Oster Astorquiza Rot is incredible! I highly suggest trying this ink out. It had gorgeous shading and writes wet. It'd be great for letter writing, journaling, or editing.
