My inspiration for this piece came from names of the pen and ink- Cracked Ice and Midnight Blue. When put together, they painted a picture in my head of a figure skater twirling on the ice under the moonlight. I decided to put my fountain pen to paper and try to create that image.
I started out by looking at a reference picture of a figure skater. I used a pencil to sketch out rough shapes of how the body was bending, then went over it again with darker lines to firm up the outline. The mute, dark blue of the ink reminded me of silvery moonlight and I wanted that to be reflected in her skin. I used a water brush filled with clean water and dabbed it into the cap of the ink to build up the shadows, going from lightest to darkest. I took my Duragraph and used it to outline the skater's shape and facial features. Using the brush pen, I added in some swirls to create movement.
To be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of the Extra-fine nib on the Conklin Duragraph. It was a little to stingy with the ink for my liking, but if you are someone who likes dry-writing pens or use less expensive paper, this could be a good option. The weight of the pen is perfect for me, and I love the vintage feel to the design. Faber-Castell Midnight Blue had some surprising red undertones when water was added, and dried into a beautiful dark blue shade.
This would be a fantastic combo for any writing task you might wish to undertake. I would enjoy journaling with it or writing letters, since the Extra-fine nib would be great for small writing. The ink color is easy on the eyes and would be soothing to write with in any number of circumstances.
